Hi, you're in luck, Denis Chang will be in town around then (the 21st-23rd I believe) and he will be doing a show with John Mcgann, and teaching an in depth workshop. All the details haven't been hammered out yet, but it should be a great weekend.
Also that sunday (feb. 24th) I'm hosting a Gypsy Jazz Jam at Atwood's Tavern. We've been doing them for a while and they've been a blast, we've had some great musicians drop in and it's a very friendly environment.
I feel like around here Denis and John hardly need any introduction, but just in case...
Denis Chang has been playing and teaching this music for years now, and has played with Andreas Oberg, Lollo Meier, Ritary Gaguenetti, Am ketenes, and many more. He's an accomplished rhythm guitarist who has put out a great DVD 'Jazz Manouche Accompaniment' which I believe is available from this site. He's equally impressive as a soloist and has a series of dvd's in the works to cover that topic as well. His album 'Nature Boy' is out on Jon Larsen's great Hot Club Records label. If that's not enough he's a moderator on this forum! Most of all he's a musical and open-minded player, and not just a technician. Although he's great at that too. I remember a point at DIJ '07 where Wawau said he thought Denis probably knew more about Gypsy Jazz technique than he did.
John Mcgann is a marvelous composer/arranger and guitarist and Mandolinist in myriad of styles. He's a professor at the Berklee college of music where he teaches both mandolin and guitar as well as running the school's only Djangocentric labs and ensembles. He's played and written for the Boston Symphony Orchestra, won national and regional flatpicking competitions on both mandolin and guitar, and has played and recorded with waaaay too many people of note for me to list here. His musical sense is sublime and his harmonic palette is something great and extends on beyond Gypsy jazz into all sorts of wonderful territory. Also, hey look, he's a moderator on this forum too!
hope to see you at any or all of these events.
