Gypsy Tuning Machines

Hey guys, I'm in the middle of building a Selmer style guitar using Michael Collins' book, and I'm considering my options for hardware. I was wondering if there is really anything special about the tuners made for these types of guitars, or if I could just use any standard acoustic tuners without any problem. I know the upper string posts generally need to be filed down, but other than that I can't see much difference. Thanks for your time.

Dupont uses Schaller gold plated tuners on the MD series, they are good and can be had for about $50

I really like the look of the DM and DR tuners but they are six times more expensive!

I know that this is not a standard for Selmer style guitars, but Grover makes a set of tuners (see StewMac link) that has one performance advantage over the others (I think): it has an 18:1 gear ratio, as opposed to the more standard 16:1 or 14:1 ratios found on most tuning machines.

I don't know a lot about this, but the flattops that I've played with 18:1 ratios do tune better.
