Path to Django = through Europe?

most of us on the other side of the world must cut our own paths in learning this style from books and videos and such. sometimes if we're lucky, we'll get a teacher.

however, can the serious student get all he needs to become a great gypsy swing player through books? how important would it be to travel to europe and learn the traditional way to become great in this style?
