I found a picture of Django with jazz pianist Bernard Peiffer.
The photo is on page 193 of
"The Ultimate Django's Book," [Bookmakers International].
One of my students lent it to me, [it's the book with the lead sheets/melodies and recording dates etc.]
Anyhow, I knew Bernard thru the late great bassist, Al Stauffer.
Unfortunately Al and Bernard are both gone, and I didn't know that Bernard played with Django until a few years ago. [Al may have mentioned it at the time, but I was probably more into straight-ahead players at the time].
The photo was taken at the Club Saint-Germain in 1951.
Supposedly Bernard was one of the few piano players that Django liked to play with.
I studied with Al for a few years. He taught a bunch of guitar players, including Jimmy Bruno. * Bernard moved to the US after the war and he and his wife ended up in Philly. He died fairly young from kidney disease, I belive. [His wife was a movie actress in France, stunningly beautiful, of course. She owned a restaurant in Philly, [I think her 1st name was Corrine? ] Bernard was an amazing player and composer. You can find out more about him by a net search. He fought in the French resistance and was imprisoned by the Nazis. His life and story were really amazing. Anyhow seeing this picture really made my day. And to Al and Bernard,
I'll never forget you guys, I'm still inspired by what you did and who you
were as artists and men. Not only do I remember your music,
but you were both unforgettable. [Al was quite a character,
he scatted along with his solos, and made all of his students learn songs like "All the Things You are," and "The Song is You," in all 12 keys!]
[That's one way to really learn a song!!]
Al had great jokes and gig stories. If anybody has any more info on Bernard Pieffer, or memories of Al, please post or email me offlist.
Thanks,
BW
* A local drummer that grew up with Jimmy in South Philly, once told me that Jimmy at age 13 played pretty much the way that he plays today[!!!] Jimmy's Dad had a hit with his recording of the classic "Guitar Boogie Shuffle." [How's that for arcane info?]
