So my wife was invited to a swank restaurant for lunch the other day by her academic dean (she's a professor), and the occasion is just to throw a party for all the faculty recently granted tenure in her college. She sits across the table from a young mathematician who blithely began to annoy everyone with his arrogance. Trying to change the subject, my wife asks him what he liked to do in his spare time. He replied:
-- (pronounced very distinctly) "I play swing violin."
-- Really? How interesting. My husband likes the music of Django Reinhardt. Do you know him?
-- No, I don't have time to meet any local musicians.
-- (behaving herself) Ah, but you must know Stephane... Stephane...
A voice from down the table cries out "Grappelli! Stephane Grappelli!"
-- Yes, Stephane Grappelli, thank you. (turning to the mathematician)
-- Never heard of him.
I nearly cried with laughter. Is such a thing possible?
Cheers,
Ando
