The "getting into gypsy jazz" book is awesome but it is missing important stuff that you get in the "l'Espirit Manouche" book. they are complementary to each other. personally though, I think Dennis Changs first DVD will basically cover you.

I got 2 unique ideas from Wrembels book. One was his "organic" approach to approach notes, which is very useful, and the other was his "ACE" system , which is a easier version of the CAGED system.

One thing to be careful of with the Romane book is that some of the typos (there are many!!) can be quite confusing. Some even refer to something in the wrong key, which leaves you trying to figure out how the exercise could possibly be in that key, until you realize it's a typo.

Also, Djangology, when you say Dennis' first DVD covers it all, do you mean the first imrpov DVD or the rhythm DVD?

Dennis - I get this question quite a bit from people who know I have your DVDs. Basically it all boils down to the same question: "What's on which DVDs?" People say: "He has a 4 DVD set, a 5 DVD set, and a 1 DVD set, right?" (or is it two?) ... and what they want to know is basically if these are all unique DVDs or if the 4 & 1 are a break-off of the five. In other words, if a person gets the 5 set... does that get them everything? (and what is the pricing on all three sets.

Actually, I don't really know the answer :) I just know that I'm about two discs into the 4 DVD set and wow... liking it - but it's quite a workout.

You get one chance to enjoy this day, but if you're doing it right, that's enough.

    Bob:

Maybe I can help clear this up.

There are currently 5 Denis Chang DVD's.

The first is "The Art of Accompaniment". This DVD deals strictly with Rhythm Accompaniment. Denis starts with clear explanations and demonstrations of the basic "pompe". He then starts showing subtlties like upstrokes, triplettes, accents, etc.

Later on the dvd he demos different rhythm styles like waltz, bossa, etc.

The 4 DVD set entitled "Jazz Manouche Technique & Improvisation" is Denis' comprehensive study of Jazz Manouche Improvisation and lead guitar. Each DVD builds upon the knowledge of the previous DVDs. For this reason Denis recommends that you approach the DVDs in numerical order, to derive the greatest benefit.

Many advanced players may wish to start with Vol 2 or 3 and they will benefit from this approach, but for most players there are important examples or technical points on each DVD.

The way we are selling these dvds from our website : http://www.hyperhipmedia.com

    is as follows:

1: HM0006 The Art of Accompaniment

2: HM0011 All 4 Vols of Jazz Manouche Technique & Improvisation

4: all 4 vols of Jazz Manouche Technique & Improv are also available as individual DVDs.

We are offering substantial discounts for #2 and #3 above, including FREE shipping!

I hope this helps to clear things up. Visit the website for additional info.
