.... the incidence of totally dead strings turned me off.
You know the trick about twisting up a DOA string, right? A year or two ago, lots of people, my self included, were getting dead Argentine 10 "A" strings right out of the box. Twisting them up 3-4 turns against the winding (counterclockwise viewed from the lower end if I recall) brought them back to life. Haven't noticed any dead ones in the last year, but I switched to 11s so that might be a factor.
Strings, can't live with 'em, can't live without 'em.

Hi Craig,
Yes, I do know of that trick. I tried it with the last bad Argie A string, and it helped some, but not entirely. I think for now I'll stick with D'Addarios. They work fine for me, and the local music store carries them. I like to support the local guys when I can. Maybe someday I'll give the Argies a bash again and see if they've straightened things out.

I've had that problem with the loop-ends, bought 5 packs on-line, went through them in a couple of weeks!! But, having never had that problem with the ball-ends i'd previously been using (same, guitar/frets/player/style), i went back to them, & hey presto, no fraying around the frets at all. I think it's Argentines quality control (or lack of it), personally.
