Its an art in itself..My fav rhythm players are Nous'che and Hono and I have to say my mate Finton fron HCOD is an animal when it comes to pure pompe. For a good place to start when it comes to thinking outside the box in this style I found this cd to be invaluable

A great rhythm solo is a thing of beauty. Some of those guys are monster lead players too - they're just dedicated to the rhythm job... like Hono... takes a brief smile and then back to 100% business driving the rhythm.

I played a bit in the foyer of WICA with the gent that was playing rhythm for Samson Schmitt here a few years back - Manu? You see him backing the Schmitts quite a bit. Not sure of the name, but he tore it up - big connecting lead lines from one end of the fretboard to the other and all across it. It was clear that he understood the fretboard - he was tasteful and technical and fast and confident. Wow. But you never see the guy take a solo. Maybe he solos in jams at home. Personally... I stick to rhythm, my soloing is very rudimentary at this point. I've seen Nous'che is doing some interesting stuff with the bass - setting up a song etc.. but I don't think I've ever seen him take a solo - but there's a lot of the Rosenberg stuff I've never seen.

Mayo Hubert is the guy you mention Bob. I remember that show with Samson, and I actually recall that he did take a solo during their set and it was stunning, and I think the audience was stunned as it seemed really spontaneous....That must have been special playing with him!

I think the rhythmic/chordal aspect of Tchavolo's solos is what draws me in to his playing so much, same with the videos I've seen of Lollo Meier and some others.

Mayo Hubert actually released an album a few years back where he plays solo: it is an interesting album but pretty hard to come by.

i have a video of nous'che taking a solo, he's great, he plays in the old style (django)... the rosenberg trio bass palyer nonnie also plays amazing rhythm guitar, and i think stochelo can double on bass too...

imagine that! the rosenberg trio at DFNW, the same line up, but not the rosenberg trio you expected!
