According to the biographies, Django learned to play on a "banjo guitar" which from what I understand is a six string banjo tuned like a guitar, there is a photograph somewhere of a very young Django posing with that instrument.

my grandfather had a 12 string benjo-guitar. Actually it is somewhere in my parents house. should post a photo I suppose...
