I spoke to a an ex-BBC correspondant who once interviewed Grapelli. During the interview, Grapelli mentioned that Django told him "It's what's between the notes that matters."

    In gypsy jazz that is especially the case since the phrasing and rhythmic elements are more important that in other forms of jazz guitar. IMHO. In other forms of jazz, fluidity, order, and tone of notes also takes as much importance.

    This is just my first thought. Don't take me too literally. I just like talking about it.
