The Zoom is attractive though because you probably dont need to buy mics but it limits you on mic placement, doesn't it?
I've been thinking about getting something to record with, and the biggest thing holding me back from just getting a microphone and a preamp is that the whole package seems to be a lot more expensive than buying something like a zoom h2. Do they make things like the m-audio you posted that are under $100? Or would it even be worth it to get something like that?
Kind of seems to come down to "spend $400 for a preamp and decent mic" versus "spend $170 for something like a zoom h2 that won't sound as nice but is portable and I'm not doing pro recording or anything anyways"
I just don't know if it's worth it to spend for the zoom h2 and then still end up wanting to spend a bunch more down the road for a better quality setup.
Just to give you an idea of what the Zoom H4 is capable of, check out our myspace page. We've used it live ("Impressions" etc) and at home ("Bei Mir Bist Du Schon.") It sure beats setting up a bunch of mics and stands and running a mixing board and then into some sort of computer interface. On the home recording we just sat in a circle around the zoom pointing up towards the ceiling. On the gig we just had someone put it on a table facing us.
I re fuse to believe that anything made by zoom can be classed as professional. Go for the Sony D50 if you want a handheld recorder, or mic & pre if you don't.
