I'm looking for free or to purchase software that allows you to place notes in staff notation on the doc itself so you can basically write out a lead for let's say a horn...any ideas?
There are many choices for what you are trying to do. I use Sibelius (the full version) because on my spare time I like to compose classical style music, but they have a $10 option that should do the trick (used to be free).
Band in a box also will also do that. And you get a great music program to have fun with.
I would google free notation software and I am sure you'll find many. I know there is an Open Source one that is well regarded and it's made specifically for notation.
I think it's called "Lilypond" or something like that.
I'm running Ubuntu on my laptop, and use TuxGuitar. It opens powertab files, but to print the music and tab, I have to export it to a pdf file, which is no trouble. There's some kind of bug in the latest version that won't output to a printer. No biggie as the pdf evince software does it fine. The software seems to be good. Haven't used it a whole lot, but you can't beat the price!

I have used Music Time Deluxe for years. The new version has some really nice ease of use updates. It's way less expensive than Sibelius or Finale and will do just about anything you could want.

I use Guitar Pro 5, which allows me to write in either tab or notation (and it automatically places in the other). I really like the program, find it very easy to use - use it most often while transcribing on the fly. Imports and exports in many formats, as well. I also use Cakewalk Music Creator, but only as a cheap, low-level recording interface, as its writing aspects are way too cumbersome, to me.

I am sure Sibellius has an equivalent.
