Hello !
First of all thank you Michael for making Gypsy Picking

That's a great book !
But ... that's only a book

So I filmed myself playing with what I thought was Gypsy Picking,
And then trying to change my position following the advice I read here

http://raphael.mor.free.fr/gyps1.avi is the version after some modifications (Mainly trying to put my hand like on the phot p10 and 14)

Can anyone comment on that which one is closer to the real thing ? and how can I improve it ?

Hi Raphaël,

That looks pretty darn good to me. From that angle I can't see anything that looks noticeably wrong. Now you just have to keep at it till you can burn!

My only criticism would be that the phrase you're were playing sounded like it wasn't played perfectly in time. Not bad, but when you hear a pro play unaccompanied every note is so perfectly in time that it still sounds like there's a band behind him. It's really hard but so essentially work very hard at it.

Dennis: what do you think? Do you notice anything that Raphaël could improve on?

That's great news for me

I really wanted to get the movement down before praticing like a mad to get everything square and fast !
I'd like to thank you once again as the only thing I did was follow Gypsy Picking instructions

it looks very nice to me , i think it's just a matter of practicing in front of the mirror and time...

i think something that's tied to the timing issue (and timing is hard!!!) is the right hand, it looks quite stiff , you can sort of see that in the way it's moving around ; when u watch stochelo, angelo, bireli, the right hand is relaxed but also quite focused and the motion is very smooth.... i think it's just a matter of time...

also it's very hard to see from this angle or maybe it's just an optical illusion but it looks to me like the right hand angle is a bit bigger than most players... almost close to 90 degrees!

But yes i try to put my wrist as far as possible of the soundboard, so my wrist is bent at max... (I hope you werer talking about this angle ...there are so many possible "Right hand angles"

)

yes i was talking about that angle... compared to most players it seems quite big and when you say max, in my opinion, it is too much! you can also hurt yourself by forcing yourself to do that... it should be more or less like a classical guitar right hand angle... it's a very natural position...

when you fully extend the arm, and let your hand naturally fall down it's not gonna going to fall at a complete 90 degree angle.. it's going to fall at about 45 degrees which is the django right hand...

hey michael, i think you should put up that video of herve gaguenetti that i sent you, you see the right hand angle very clearly!!
