upstroke at higher tempos

Is it just me...it seems like at faster tempos the upstroke slows me down and i'm putting more effort into picking. For some reason on the upstroke my pick goes deeper into the strings (the faster i play) so there's more resistance on the upstroke.
I should probably practice La gitane much much slower :?
