I'd bet that both the gloss finish and the satin finished Gitanes are Urethane. I have played Gitanes with both finishes and have found the satin finished guitars to be no louder in general than the gloss finished ones.
For the money, Gitanes are hard to beat. I keep one for travel and gigs where I can't protect the guitar (outdoors in bright sunlight, etc.). Mine is a DG250-M, and while it can't hold a candle to my Dupont or my Favino, It is still an OK guitar, better than most Dell Artes and better than every Manouche guitar that I have played. I say if you can't afford a Dupont, Favino, Busato or Selmer...get a Gitane.
