Isn't the coconut too curved to make a pick out of?

Actually no, it is just enough to finesse a flat area with a slight indent for a thumb, Wegen thickness.

You get 3-5 per coconut if you pick a good sized one.

Just browsed the Blue Chip website again, and I think I would also choose the TPR 60 (http://shop.bluechippick.net/products/TPR60.html). Really, if they came in a greater thickness I would have a hard time not buying it. I am kind of surprised they haven't come out with a "gypsy jazz" version, since it appears they pretty much have the bluegrass/flatpicking market covered. Maybe the jazz picks they have are a sign they'd be open to the idea? Has anyone already inquired about this? If not, I was thinking about sending them an email.

Give thin picks a try, a lot of the masters play with much thinner picks than what one would be led to believe. Bireli played a 1.5mm Dunlop at Live a Vienne, Stochelo plays with a 1.8, Matcho Winterstein witha 2mm (and he's one LOUD player), Seb Giniaux, Adrien Moignard, Andreas Oberg, Yorgui, Samson, etc. All those guys use thin plastic picks.
Let us know if you get a bluechip.

I think I will end up getting a Blue Chip eventually. Right now I'm enjoying playing the 3.5mm Wegen and I've got a Moustache 3mm coming soon. After playing .68mm orange Dunlops for years on a flat-top, it has been really fun getting around with heavier picks. Also, I think the heavier picks have helped keep me honest as I practice the right hand technique. However, I can see how playing lead might be easier with a lighter pick in the future, and the Blue Chip gets such rave reviews that I think it is definitely worth trying.

Also, I sent a quick question to Blue Chip about making a thicker pick for this style, and I received a response that the only reason the 1.5mm is the max is because if they made them any heavier they would have to charge more than $35 per pick (closer to around $50 for a 2.5mm pick, simply because the material is so expensive). So, yeah, I can see why they'd max it out at 1.5mm!

I emailed them about 6 months ago, enquiring about lefty picks & thicker picks. They said they could do lefty picks, but not thicker ones, something to do with this material & how it is made if i remember rightly.

Which meant i didn't get one.. I'm quite happy with the red bears. The new one i got recently with holes drilled in for grip is a bit thicker than previous ones. It's real good.
  • I talked with Matthew at Blue Chip and apparently the material they make the picks from doesn't come any thicker
The Magic really starts to happen when you can play it with your eyes closed
