What a world...if you use an iPhone or Android, you can have a portable, transposable Real Book with you at all times. It's $8, and while I haven't used it yet it looks like it could be a great alternative for people who lug their books around to every jam/festival. (It's currently at 800 songs and supposedly gets updated regularly.)

Anyone using this? Mostly I wonder about the quality of the changes and the small screen size, but it has the chance to be something wonderful (you can edit the tunes if you want to make changes). Here are some screenshots and a demo:

    Dear Jack

I ve been using this application for quite sometime , the changes are more or less ok IMHO but of course there are a few tunes that could be in my opinion less complex but again its a matter of taste ! my filosophy is that simple is better ! the only bad thing i can think of is that songs with many changes look smaller on your screen so although it can work as a reference point, i personaly find it hard to follow the changes by looking at it ! of course my eyesight aint that good ! anyway the main thing is that it gets the work done plus you can transpose anything in just a matter of seconds !
dont expect to find nuages or anything the Master ever wrote but again you can edit your own songs and changes . personaly i prefer to carry my i-phone than to carry a few real books wherever i go , but again the irealbook has no melodies , i ve never realy used it in jam situations and i dont think i could ever use it cause of my eyesight plus its easier for me to follow the changes by hearing them . but as a reference point it more than ok !
Please i would like to know and other opinions

    hope i answered your question

    best regards

    I've got this, it's great!

You can write your own charts to upload too, although I haven't done any yet. With only 3 Django tunes on there so far there's plenty to do!

it's good. tried it, bought it, liked it...
also i wrote a romane tune which you can add here. the editor is a bit clunky to use with those spinboxes, but it works eventually

Quick update on this for anyone interested: some great man in Portland--Bob, from Rose City Hot Club--has been uploading charts like a madman. Right now if you have this app you can download Gypsy Jazz playlists with charts for something like 300 tunes. Incredible. Nice work, Bob, and thanks!

    best,
    Jack.

The guy that runs a local gypsy jazz jam has this, and occasionally prints charts. The resolution is OK, but I notice that some of the charts are in funny keys. Autumn Leaves, for instance, is NOT in Am! It makes it challenging for those using the standard edition Real Books, as they don't match up.

Check out Jack's first post, you can transpose the charts into any key, pretty cool feature if transposing on the fly is a challenge.

Incidentally, that is my favorite practice technique, reading the charts, or better still thinking through the charts, in terms of function, and playing it in all the keys. Can be a brain buster but really develops the ear. The more key centers in the piece, the trickier the transposing gets.
