It has been a while ... I ran Djnangofest SW for 2 years here in southern Az, but it was hard to find enough people to make it work. so I thought of getting the gypsy jazzers and the Dead Head jammers out onb the same stage ...
So... if you find yourself cruising through southern Az on the vernal equinox (Mar 20) please drop by ...

Looking forward to it!
Come on out and jam under the stars with us, we are nocturnal creatures so we are really looking forward to the late night jam in the beautiful southwest desert. Ameranouche ripped it up last time I was there, so we hope to follow in their footsteps of making the desert that much hotter!

The sun came out nice and bright Sat morning for the vernal equinox; the stage got populated within hours and people started streaming into the site. We had great musicians all day and into the night ... it was a glorious collection of friends and family.
Although outnumbered by the Dead heads about 4 to 1 Chuck Hulihan and Ryan and Armand of Hot club of Phoeniz held their own as people made their way between the main stage and the acoustic session inside the big house. The electric groups wound down around 11 PM but the acoustic jam went on til 1 AM (and we would have kept going if we had another warm place to play).
Hot Club was joined later in the evening with 2 friends from the Phoenix area violinist Miray Cakir and guitarist Joshua Rhodes of the group Duo vibrato, who added a decidedly up tempo dash of contemporary licks to what was already an explosive evening of fine GJ swinging ....
stay tuned ... we had so much fun we couldn't wait another year to put this on again .. .so check back in the fall for the Fall Fest (Halloween extravaganza) ... Sept/Oct ..
cheers and Latcho drom...
and a special to Chuck Hulihan (Duozona) and friends who really out-rocked everyone ...

What was Lou's last name? the guitarist/vocalist that joined us for several tunes? He was exceptional! I instantly remembered having seen him a few years back when you had the last django festival.

That was Lou Stebner ... a perenial favorite. He played with tom mitchell and Shep from ameranouche several years ago, we always invite him out to jams. He is a mean yodeler as well.
a fantastic gentleman with a wealth of stories. He took jazz guitar lessons from Harry Volpe in NYc when he was young. He also had a jazz club in New Jersey before moving out west. He regularly backs up local tucson vocalists.
Glad that Hot club of Phoenix enjoyed themselves ... next time we will have a heated stage (or something to get out of the cold )...
cheers,
