Stochelo Arpeggio?

Hey everyone,

Ever since I started Michael Horowitz "Gypsy Picking", I have been diligently picking away. I can now confidently say I have some pretty strong chops and am ready to take it to the next level. One lick I have ALWAYS wanted to learn more than anything else is the one at :40 in this epic Bossa Dorado video by Stochelo (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WZIQnw_gnZo). Does ANYONE have a transcription of this 2-second arpeggio (yet more ridiculous than anything I've done)? I would really appreciate it so much!

Thank you!!!!

that lick is on the stochelo instructional DVD.. he uses it all the time on E7 in other songs... you'll find it for example in my trnscription of Flots Du Danube (Anniversary song) in the download section of the hyperhipmedia site...

or soon available in the official rosenberg trio tab book dedicated to smilinjack!:lol:

    Hi Dennis,

I have all your vids. I was wondering if you have any transcriptions of any of the licks in the Stochelo or Wawau dvd's?

    Thanks

This is what I've transcribed over the chord E7b9 :
I doubt it is spot on, but it is close

Thirteen notes, three beats of 16th notes:

    1) First beat is a chromatic run from D to F (5th position) frets 5-8 on A string.
    2) Second beat, shift to seventh position, and play G Bb D Eb
    3) Third beat, play E, G, Bb, Db
    4) Fourth beat hits the High E.

    ------------------------------------8--------------------------------------------------
    ------------------------7--8----9----------------------------------------------------
    -------------------8--------------------------------------------------------------
    --5-6-7-8---10-----------------------------------------------------------------
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------

That seems a bit 'out' over the E7b9.

I think of this lick as a straightforward ascending diminished arp using F/G#/B/D with the final two notes of B and E as harmonics at the 12th fret. That way you can use all your V7 diminished vocabulary, just top it off with the harmonics - easier said than done of course because you're going from properly fretting the note to harmonic 'touching' the string.

The lick, then, can be something like this (as Dennis says, you can hear something very similar in Stoch's 'Anniversary song' solo on the Djangologists film/album). Pretty much the same as yours but a semitone up for the most part:

    ------------------------------------------<12>--
    ------------------------------9---<12>---------
    -------------------7---10------------------------
    ----------6---9-----------------------------------
    -4567-------------------------------------------
    ---------------------------------------------------

BTW I was just testing this out before posting and found that the easiest way to play it and get the smooth switch to harmonics was to use 'Django' fingering for the left hand rather than a more orthodox index-ring or index-pinky approach. The usual health warnings (I am not a qualified guitar teacher, etc) apply but it might work for you too.
