OTTO PANKOK: SINTI
An exhibition in the Stephen Lawrence Gallery of Greenwich University.
Otto Pankok (1893-1966) has been one of the most important figures of the West German Expressionism during the 1920ies. During the 1930ies he encountered Sinti, the German Gypsies. The artist rented a former chicken-barn in a Sinti settlement in Düsseldorf as atelier. The exhibition "Otto Pankok: SINTI" in the Stephen Lawrence Gallery focuses on the graphical work of that time - edgings and wood cuts - but also on bronze sculptors of the famous artist. Photographs, books and documents give a lively impression of this intercultural encounter and also the persecution of the artist himself. The art works exhibited are exquisite examples of the work of Otto Pankok, expressing his friendship with the Sinti during the unloving times of the fascist regime in Germany. But they are not only Fine Art, they are a rare artistic document of the Holocaust and furthermore, they are a touching memorial to the people lost.
