Hoping someone might be able to help me locate some free Gypsy Jazz violin sheet music. My girlfriend is a great Irish fiddler and I would like to get her jamming with me! I am aware of all the great DVD's and books, but was hoping that there might be some free music out there just to get her started and to see if she takes to it or not... before another investment!
Thanks,
-Ryan

"A Few Tunes To Get You Started
For starters, here's a zip file containing lead sheets (in pdf format) to 11 standard Gypsy jazz tunes in standard notation and guitar TAB. I suggest you track down recordings of the tunes…working strictly from the lead sheets won't get you very far. They are:

Dark Eyes, Minor Swing, Django's Castle, Bossa Dorado, Minor Blues, Swing 42, Swing Gitan, Swing 39, Douce Ambiance, Djangology, Daphne"

Gypsy jazz guitar is a genre based on the music of Django Reinhardt, a guitar player who overcame a severe disability to become a legend in jazz music. Most people have heard music by the Quintet du Hot Club de France or one of the gypsy jazz groups devoted to its style of music.

Django and Stephane also added a lot of American standards to their rep as well. Since the solos in these songs were all improvised around the melody (for Stephane at least), your best bet would be to download the lead sheets for these tunes and practice away.

My favorite (free) lead sheet sites include...

    http://www.stephanewrembel.com/rhythmtracks.html
    http://www.wikifonia.org/
    http://ralphpatt.com/Backing.html

Also do a Google search for "Django Fakebook.pdf" without the quotes. It's a (biggish) file with a lot of Django tune lead sheets. A little hard to find but it's out there!

    Cool sites!
