I can see why he chose Cypress backs and sides
    The DG-560 certainly makes a fine drummer/strummer.
Excellent player, It would have been nice to hear something a little more single string and less cowbell, I mean cajon.

Please sir, may I have some more rosewood. ?

Jumping in here because this question has been burning inside me for sometime. How popular/accepted are nylon string guitars in Gypsy Jazz? I love the feel of nylon strings but are the necks as chunky as classical guitars? Do they stand a chance of being heard in a jam with steelies?

Seems like, as long as you are amped, like with a schertler pickup, that it would work fine. String tension is lower and so there might be a certain amount of lag in string action.

Hey guys, I just thought I would add something here. I have converted my Gitane D-500 into a Nylon string guitar. It has a sound resembling something between a Selmer and a Classical. Here is a quick video I made to show you all how you can do it relatively easily, and what the final sound will approximately sound like. Of course, if the Lulo Reinhardt model is fan braced you'll probably end up with an even mellower sound. Enjoy!

Here is my youtube channel by the way:

PS- I know I keep saying Lulu instead of Lulo...sometimes I'm really quite brainless.

I've been thinking of doing the same thing. What strings did you use?

Tele295, I believe the strings I chose were Ernie Ball Earthwood Nylon Ball End's. They seem to be a good compromise between an Argie and a Nylon sound.

    Shawn,

    Thanks for posting this.

-How does this guitar strung with nylon strings compare volume wise with a run of the mill nylon/classical?

-Did you notice a big drop in volume going from steel to nylon?

    Thanks,
    Jason

    Jason,

    1. Volume wise compared to a run of the mill classical, there is a substantial output of volume compared to these guitars. The sound would be comparible to something between a classical and a Selmer strung with Argies...better volume, but a much darker tone.

    2. There is definitely a decrease in volume from steel strings, as there would be with any guitar going from steel to nylon. However, as I said, there is still greater volume output compared to other nylon strung guitars.

    Thanks,
    Shawn

I have a Jesus Jurado Maccaferri-style classical. I have used
LaBella 860 nylon strings, the 2nd and 3rd are nylon with nylon windings.
A bit fuller than standard high tension nylons. I am now using
Thomastik Infeld Classic S series, very soft low tension steel strings.
You can find out more by checking them out at Juststrings.
They add that steel bite and last a long time, worth the extra cost.
