when i show licks (or if they show me licks they transcribed) to my students, i make sure they understand them clearly ...
in other words, they know how it works rhythmically, (where it should be placed)... in this case, this is a lick that comes before the beat (as fapy would say), that is it anticipates the chord (E7), it's also important to know where it ends rhythmically
then it's important to be able to visualize the chord position that it's derived from, so you can understand it clearly in harmonic terms and so that u can transposite it elsewhere... in this case;; it's coming from this shape:
12 14 12 13 15 12 (E7) (that's the shape i like to visualize but any variation from this position will do)
x 12 14 14 13 12 (Am)
