In 2006, the first New Mexico DjangoFestival began as a two day event in Santa Fe. It featured The Hot Club of San Francisco, the Djangomatics from Seattle and New Mexico's Le Chat Lunatique. After the success of the first festival, Le Chat Lunatique's Guitarist John Sandlin took over as festival organizer and produced the 2nd New Mexico DjangoFestival in Albuquerque in 2007. The three day event drew standing room only audiences to its venues that featured headliner Howard Alden, regional bands Mango fan Django (Colorado Springs), Hot Club of Phoenix, Hot Club of Santa Fe, and local acts Felix y Los Gatos and Le Chat Lunatique. In 2008, the 3rd New Mexico DjangoFestival carried on the tradition with a stellar lineup and near sold out shows. Performers for the four day festival included headliner Stephane Wrembel and the Django Experiment, as well as Mango fan Django, Hot Club of Phoenix, Hot Club of Santa Fe, Swing from Paris (United Kingdom), and local acts Le Chat Lunatique, Zoltan Orkestar, Sweet and Lowdown, Eva Ave and Carlosaur, and the Moore Twins.
This year, the 100th anniversary of Reinhardt's birth, the 4th New Mexico DjangoFestival hopes to be the most exciting yet! Featuring internationally famed headliner Gonzalo Bergara, and the Gonzalo Bergara Quartet, other incredible acts include Hot Club of Phoenix, Mango fan Django, Swing From Paris, Hot Club of Santa Fe, and special guest Shoestring Trio (Los Angeles). Local flavor will be provided by Le Chat Lunatique, Zoltan Orkestar, and Django Rhythm Meat Grinder. The festival kicks off October 21st, with an FREE opening night soiree at Scalo's Il Bar, featuring Le Chat Lunatique and friends. The following night, October 22nd, will include an early show at the Kosmos featuring the Gonzalo Bergara Quartet and two other acts, and a late show at Low Spirits Bar and Stage featuring three more exciting groups. Saturday's events include a recovery breakfast at Winnings Coffee, a workshop with Gonzalo Bergara, and a blowout seven-band show at Low Spirits Bar and Stage! Sunday, October 24th, features a FREE jam at Old Town Plaza featuring many of your favorite musicians...and YOU!!!
Dancers, musicians, and audiences alike will come together to celebrate New Mexico's diverse artistic community through the music and life of Django Reinhardt! Don't miss it!
