There are definitely some affordable choices if I start getting rid of my electrics.
It seems as if these two are readily available. My only reservation about the Nomade would be the bolt on neck. I'm sure it sounds fantastic.
Dupont Nomade
Dell'Arte Latcho Drom
These seem to be more difficult to find. My major reservation would be that I would have to most likely import one of these. I'm sort of skittish about doing that for the money that I would be spending.
Manouche Moreno
Pattenotte Model 260
Harmworth and Willis
I wish I lived out over there on the other side of the country. I'd love to try some nice guitars out.

I've never been a guitar player, but I've played one on stage.
kjaz,
I'm ready to sell the Manouche Moreno Michael Bauer was speaking of, but call me if your interested. It's loud, darkish, but solid sounding.
I don't want to deal with selling in the usual ways. Be aware the neck is wide at the nut like the old days.

I'm really leaning towards the Nomade D-hole, based on the opinion of some folks around here and Michael. My co-guitar player is in France and is going to stop by the Dupont showroom tomorrow to give the Nomade's they have on hand a worthy spin and tell me what he thinks. I've played his MDC-60 at our weekly gig and adore it.
I have closer to $2000 to spend, so this certainly affords me a better quality instrument.
Looks like I'm going to wait, yet again. Reality is setting from reading here and from a good conversation I had with some players (and my co-guitar player) last night after our gig that I really should be trying out guitars for this price. Problem is that there isn't much to try in NYC, especially in my price range. I contacted Rodrigo Shopis and I'm going to see what develops from there.
You're in NYC? Are you planning to go to Django in June in Northampton, MA? Just three weeks away.
Excuse me if I'm telling you what you already know, but.....
There will be hundreds of players attending and at least that many guitars. Most players are quite happy to let you test drive their guitar(s). You can try far more than you might find in most stores and might very well bump into a guitar you like that might just be for sale if you simply ask. I bought a great MD-50B I first played there 2008 and pursued when it came up for sale about six months later. Assuming you would be happy with a used guitar that is. Personally, I prefer used. Price is usually lower, often considerably so and in better guitars, they typically sound and play better than new. If you prefer new, you can likewise sample a large number of the models currently available new.
Not to mention all the other good things about DiJ. If you can't make the whole thing, you are close enough to drive up for the day. Peak is probably Friday and Saturday.

I'm probably just a bit ready to pull the trigger, as my friend is about to pull his own trigger on a Dupont MDC60.

Fed Ex did not pay attention to the markings on the shipping box - "Do Not Stack, Fragile."
Guitar ended up with an unwanted feature - a removable headstock. Boo.
Guitar was returned, claim was filed. Holding my breath that I get some money back.

Have you made any progress on this yet?

Uggh. What a slippery slope this is.
