String Clearance is the distance between the guitar strings and the top surface of the pickup (or the pole pieces).

Pole pieces are are the individual cylinders of magnetic material that convert each string's vibration to an electrical signal. In many cases, the height of each pole piece is adjustable so one may adjust the relative loudness or each string.
