Actually, there is no best way....the way that works for a player that gets the attack, the articulation, the phrasing and the tone desired ...that is the way for that player....
If you want to play like someone else, copy them to the best of your ability. You will get farther by letting your ears tell you how it is being played if possible.
My sax teacher keeps telling me they way to rip the phrases that speak to me the loudest. Learn em in all keys. Practice them, not until I can play it right but until I can't play it wrong.
