Rhythm Hits

edited December 2011 in Technique Posts: 19
OK maybe this has been discussed before and I missed it. I have played with several bands and many jam sessions and have a question about Rhythm Hits and other Embellishments.

If you are playing in a 2 Guitar, Bass & other Lead Instrument situation does everyone playing rhythm need to do the Hits?

I've played with some people that seem to be doing Hit's quite a bit whenever they feel like it. I've also have played in a trio setting a did a Hit and the Bass player get's mad if He doesn't know before hand.

So how should 2 guitar players playing rhythm together approach Hit's, Shuffles & other Rhythm Embellishments?

it's a very very subtle art, and my suggestion is the less the better... and to only do it at key points... ie at the end of a section or during a climactic section as a reaction to what teh soloist is doing... otherwise keep it dead straight...

or hits can also work if they're part of an arranged section , in other words something that the band works out together
