Put it where the bottom screw of the tailpiece is (replacing existing one). Drilling below there would be the proverbial "tear a new one", and not a nice thing to do to a guitar. It may also be weak below there, not centered, and you could be in danger of missing the block of wood which is usually behind and reinforcing the tailpiece.
You'll have to drill out the metal tailpiece a bit. I did this on a Cigano a long time ago, to install a K&K pickup, and I put the other strap pin on the heel (under the fingerboard, where the neck joins to the body). There are some pictures here:

The K&K, by the way, sounded abysmal. Absolute garbage. The strap pins were sturdy though and I never had any problem with that.
My Dupont MD-100 came with what appears to be a strap button on the bottom screw of the tail piece. You can see it easily on the 2024 Dupont MD50 (Cedar Top) that Michael has for sale. I always assumed that if you remove the strap button, it is ready for a 1/4 inch jack.
BTW: Still have the Altamira M01F on the market @ $900 in the SF Bay area. It's nearly perfect with an altamira case.
Right on, that's great, thanks for that. Yeah, excellent seeing the pics. Yes, "tearing a new one", didn't really seem like a great idea. K&Ks are weird, I have heard them sound great in some guitars...didn't happen for me though.
I myself put in a bridge pickup which needed a 1/4" jack out on my Gitane DG-320 John Jorgenson model, that in a lot of flattops serves as a strap button as well. I first looked inside the guitar, and saw there is a thick wooden block going down the back behind the tailpiece. I decided to cut a hole below the tailpiece vs. in it like some of the other GJ guitars have. I had no issues with any damage to the finish/body and it's holding steady, though I do not use a strap.
