Asheville vs. Nashville

Hello group,

I will be finishing up my residency here at the University at Buffalo, and will be moving back south. Wondering if there are any players in the Asheville, NC and/or Nashville, TN areas. These are the areas that I am seeking employment in, in emergency medicine. Would be great to connect with players of the genre in these regions.

Just let me know,

Thanks,

Marcelo Damon

My friend Matt Sims is in Nashville I think. He's a good player and a nice guy.

For the record I worked in the ER at Centennial Medical Center in Nashville on a travel contract and it was the 2nd worst place I've ever worked (Ding ding the winner is UMASS Worcester in MA). The word on the street were that all the Nashville hospitals were pretty shitty. Centennial was absurdly shitty, comically awful. This is 2014, who knows, but things usually get worse...

But for music generally, Nashville was fucking amazing. I didn't really hear any jazz down there, not that I was looking for, but there are so many great musicians everywhere and people are kinda cool. And the food was nuts. So much barbecue. I'm ostensibly vegetarian now but I wasn't then.

I'm not in the health care field, so I have little of value to say about the hospital in Asheville. Except that a mega for-profit corporation took it over several years ago & I've heard that it's not what it used to be, for patients & employees alike. As for the gypsy jazz scene here, the area is in recovery mode from hurricane Helene and will be for years, so there's that. (You may have heard, the area suffered over a billion dollars in damage last fall). The gigs are partially back, but they're limited. But the players here are nice and there's room for another good player, especially one with medical skills! Hit me up if you end up landing here.

Isn't there a guy named Andy who teaches jazz in a college down there? I met him at Django in June.

I think you're referencing Andy Page. He's a great GJ guitar player who teaches at Appalachian State College, which is about 2hrs from Asheville. Scot Wise, one of our brothers here on the forum who lives in the Charlotte area, used to play with Andy & his twin brother Zack (monster on the upright) back in the 2000's.

I looked up Andy. He's phenomenally good.

Hank Bones, if he's still in Asheville, is another great (non-gypsy-jazz) guitarist.

A year ago, Asheville was one of the hippest and most musical small cities in the country, every kind of music you could think of, full of great players and live music everywhere, restaurants, breweries.... A friend once sent me a text and said he heard gypsy jazz in two different bars on the same street at the same time - probably the only place in the country such a thing could happen.

When I played with the Page Brothers we played all kinds of stuff - Monk, Mingus, Dexter Gordon, Lennie Tristano etc along with trad GJ material. It's the kind of town where people like that kind of thing. Those guys are so good, here's a clip

Sadly the hurricane really tore things up there. The music scene will come back because Asheville is a mountain town full of resilient people who are committed to building it back. But it'll take some time.

I used to see Hank Bones when he was playing in Russ Wilson's big band, a terrific guitarist.

Marcelo, I have a friend who was an ER nurse there for a long time, I'll see what I can find out about the medical vibe from him.

Most hospitals in the US, at least the ERs are run by large groups. There are only a few hospitals left that operate on a traditional model. I'm not really looking to gig, but just to meet people to jam with. I still practice every day, and it would be nice to meet folks that want to get together regularly. An occasional gig sounds good. I'll let you know if I do move here though. We can get together to play. You can try out my Selmer, if you'd like.

Sounds good. I am liking the city so far. I was just downtown having a bite at a local Indian restaurant. Lots of good options for places to dine here. If I end up down here, I'll let you know. We can get together to jam.
