OK, thanks Jay, I'll try that. No, in fact I think I play generally more quietly on rhythm than lead. I keep working to play softly, while still driving. I ain't there yet. Love Hono, and worked and worked on his sound; since coming to the Rosenbergs, more and more, that elusive driving, yet smooth, and totally swinging sound is something I really would like to capture. It's ironic to me how "bell-like" the lead sounds - it really sounds nice, something approaching a decent recording. Not my playing, of course - - but the tone itself.
OK, first experience with using the Q3HD, and first experience uploading to youtube. Lighting is low, I think, so the vid quality isn't the greatest, but as it is, clip of Sheik of Araby in A. (decided on closing it on the fly, and outro is messed up...just playing with recording for my own practice, but hopefully it gives something for some feedback).
in that case try repositioning the mic when you are playing rhythm. Something odd in what you describe but I cant put my finger on it yet.
Btw i watched sheik of araby. Right hand is hitting strings differently at times resulting in different sounds.
Left hand muting timing ...left hand muting timing .....
I am back to 60 bpm reworking the timing on my second stroke muting to get better control of the amount of muting. I want to be able to go from dry to wet on 2/4 beat strokes on command...... This rhythm is a lifelong study
The Magic really starts to happen when you can play it with your eyes closed
On the youtube clip, yep, I know. Consistency is the beast that eludes me, and I won't be happy until I'm not thinking, and my rhythm is like an unchanging engine, what Hono calls carré, douce et carré. I can approach it going really slowly, but speeding up isn't there yet. Actually, there's a lot that's not there, and it's not going to come quickly, I know. I'm working off of Stochelo's rhythm on the "In the Style of..." thing, so there it is.
I wanted more to post what the Q3 sounds like, as a really simple solution. I'm very keyed with this little thing, will be really useful.
Just wanted to publicly thanks Denis Chang, who watched the clip and provided a ton of detailed, helpful critique. Jay, you as well, thanks, as always, man. Very much have a bite on what needs to be worked on, very grateful.
An updated attempt - Sheik of Araby. I think I'll do my best to chart progress, from these rudimentary things, till...I'm just as happy a player at 80.
Just wanted to post some clips of my group last night, unedited in low light using the Zoom Q3HD.
Also a nice chance to share some stuff. I came back from DIJ last summer incredibly jazzed, and incredibly lonely, for fellow players, so I started a jam group. It's grown pretty organically, we have a jam home weekly in our local Irish pub and these clips represent the first time we've played together on a gig, we opened for a local group. Had no idea nerves could strike this old ex-actor, but man, they did....!
Also a good chance to use my Ischell....room was pretty bouncy, so the sound guy suggested I don't use the AT 831B. I want to play with this because, as I play rhythm, I think I might be playing at low enough of a volume I can get away with it. The sound guy had me pretty loud, and I asked him to pull me down quite a bit in sound check, so didn't push the Ischell. Still, very pleased, thanks most especially Jkaz and Klaatu for your help there.
Anyway, I'm very fond of the people I play with, and thought it's a good opportunity to show what the Zoom does, unedited. (I'm the guy who looks like he's an electric blue halo...too nervous to even think of asking them to kill the light that blinded me...lol). Video is poor, but I like the audio one gets out of it. I got it knowing the video was its lesser quality, so all in all, pretty happy.

Do you play rhythm noticeably louder than lead?
