That Ferret Bros. set from Fremeaux is pretty essential, in my opinion.

If you're going for historical context, you might want to check out the Musik Deutscher Zigeuner series of CDs:

I have the first one (by Schnuckenack Reinhardt) and enjoy it very much.
  • I really enjoyed the Ferre Bros triple CD. Got it from Michael last year after reading Dregni's second book

Bireli Gypsy Project and Friends or I think Michael has a Bireli box set with like 4 cd's which is a great deal and some really nice stuff there.

I'm also partial to Gonzalo and the Rosenbergs for contemporary stuff.

Or Les Droits, Stephane Wrembel, Joscho, etc. etc.

There is a lot of new stuff out that has a nice modern twist to it.

Also, check out dvd's like Bireli Live Jazz a Vienne, etc. for some inspiration.

This reissued set by Fapy Lafertin is the one I would buy next:

    Absolutely essential.

Don't know about him so I guess I need to get educated. Just ordered it. That link had the lowest price I could find with reasonable shipping to Canada.

    This is a great thread.

Can we get this thread sticky'd? :)

Looks like this is out of stock, unfortunately. What a resource.

It is a shame that's out of stock here, wonderful album, I wrote a review for it here. Michael is far too expensive though for CD's but almost too cheap for guitars, way cheaper than european sellers.

If you're interested in the link between old manouche and new manouche, buy some Waso albums, Fapy and Waso de Cauter are the modern equivalent of Django and Hubert at least

Fapy is considered to be the modern player whose sound is closest to Django. He is a wonderful artist, and his recordings are essential to any GJ collection.

Fapy just makes me happy. Unadorned, old-school. I listen to the release Ben links to, whenever I wonder whether there's still room for old school in today's world.

  • I've been digging this record quite a bit. I didn't see it available here, so I've included a link from another place. Quality playing from both of Angelo Debarre and Moreno.
