Check out the specs on the Onyx. It was recommended to me by a long time pro sound man...preamps are studio quality sound

Around 500 sliders re accurate and can usb stereo mix to computer

I can also by adding in my tine ART tube pre ose one of the powered speakers for an amp if I had to.

Although pretty big they are reasonably accurate and open. Nice acoustic sound.

Thanks Jay, I did do some cursory digging after your mention of the Onyx, thanks for the heads up. This is all so new to me, playing catchup....is it still the case for many folks that they distinguish "studio" from "live sound" mixers? Haven't looked more carefully at this mixer's specs, but cool it seems to be able to do doubly duty.

  • This one is not really a studio mixer as the output to the computer is only a stereo mix and no one today would record that way seriously. But it is that quality. Dead silent. Only downside to it is there is a really big bass thump when turned off.

Its not small like the Behringer but if you A-B the two there is a audible difference in the openness and accuracy of the sound.

I have to remember to turn off power to amps before I switch it off

Thanks, Jay. Hear you on the thump. I can be spacey and have made it habit to make sure gain and master is zeroed, before hitting anything. Not pleasant!

Here in NYC, portability and weight is key. For most clubs with PA, we just bring our own amps- often one guitarist will bring AER 60 and both guitars will plug in. Violin goes DI and bass brings their own amp or goes DI. If we have to supply everything (weddings), we use Behringer EPA150 for violin, vox and guitars. Would prefer more power but you can't beat the portability of the 150 and we haven't maxed it out yet.

Thanks, Swing. I'll look into it. I had a lot of folks on stage for our (first) outing, but thinking on some tighter configurations, a trio or quartet, so these thoughts are very much appreciated.

I'm still drooling after that beautiful guitar of yours.

    Cheers,

    Paul

Edit: Forgot to ask. If you go to a place with PA and you amp your guitars, do you mic or Pre/Post Eq out those amps into the house PA, or just use them as a backline mix with the house PA on the other instruments?

One more - this mixer seems packed, for its footprint. Didn't specifically see...do the FX include compressor, as well as reverb?

We have been quite happy with the 3-channel Carvin AG100D for all but loud street fairs, etc. 100 watts, with effects, and you can add the extension cabinet if needed. I like that you can pick up the whole PA up with one hand, prewired speakers, ready to go. It's loud enough for noisy taverns and large banquet halls. I've added a small 4-knob pocket-size line mixer to add a few more instruments to channel 2. Handles all the guitars, vocals, violin, etc. I usually run the upright bass separately.

Wow, cool, Tele. So you could add another cabinet, and split the speakers, so in essence you've a left and right FOH?

(sorry for the jargon...this stuff is all totally new to me....so I sound like a newly-born lover of football, who knows nothing except a few key buzzwords, just to sound like he knows what he's doing....! )

I'm not sure it's a stereo set up, and there are no pan pots. I believe it's left and right, mono, which is better for fuller coverage.

We do have the extension cabinet when we need it, and they are both covered in brown tolex. Great set up, and very affordable!

Thanks, Tele. Never heard of the make until now. My Trace Elliot, very pleased with it, though haven't tried running two instruments (it has 2 channels) out of it. It also has a link feature, not sure entirely how that might work.

Edit: Just saw the pic. VERY cool, Miles!
