Audia Technia mics?

Are the Audia Technica mics a pain the a..s to put in and take out? Any damage to the finish, or is the felt covering okay on the clip? I like a natural tone and stuff that's not "invasive" I have a Schertler Basik, which in spite of fiddling around with the putty, actually works very well. Opinions appreciated.

No damage at all. The felt protects the finish quite well. As to whether they are a pain to install, it depends on how you do it. If you follow the "standard" procedure of clipping the mike to the outside of the guitar, it's quite easy. If you use the Gonzalo Bergara approach of placing it inside the sound hole, it's a bit tricky.

Thanks Klaatu, yeah I've seen Gonzalo do a couple of local gigs with his AT mic (and Phil Jones amp). Seemed like a sweet setup and a good sound, but didn't require much volume. In some of his videos, he just leaves the clip in place, even when playing without the mic. This made me think taking the clip off and on might be difficult, or may tear up the edge of the soul hole? I would also want to use this on my flat top guitars, so can't mount on tailpiece. Lower volume is probably okay...only ever play out in coffee shops. Avoid drums.

they are great! sound really good through any acoustic amp or PA and after you get the hang of putting them on, are very easy to use.

no damage to the instrument at all.

love mine. would recommend it for sure.

One extra data point for you: on my Audio Technica Pro 70 mic, the green felt comes off very easily. If I'm not careful, the non-felt part of the clip comes into contact with the top of the guitar, because the felt gets "pushed down" as I try to put the thing on.

If you purchase a new one, I recommend being very careful with it, such that you don't push the green felt off. Once it's off (unglued?), it's a pain to push it back each time you want to put the thing on your guitar.

All in all the microphone is a pain to deal with, frankly, with the possible guitar-top-scratching of the clip, plus the problem of feedback unless you get the thing positioned *exactly* right. The tone can be really good, though, so it's up to you to decide where you want to compromise on the spectrums of setup pain vs. feedback potential vs. tone.

    That's my two cents!

Is there a better mic out there if you want to go the mic route instead of the pickup route ??

Or do all mics have major feedback issues ?

The Ischell has the same great mic sound, but is more feedback resistant as it's mounted on the top. They have become very popular recently, having been adopted by artists like Stephane Wrembel and Romane.

    Michael,

How do those compare to the Schertlers that mount to the top?

Can they be used on archtops as well?

    thanks

The Ischell is a mic, so it's even more natural and detailed than the Schertler pickups. It can be used on any string instrument.

    Thanks,

+1 for the Ischell. Granted, I didn't use mine much (couple of times only, the odd practice session at home and recently sold to a wise friend from the forum), but I have to say, from my (short-term) experience, it's absolutely fantastic. I'm certain I'll be getting another one from Michael in the not too distant future.
