Anthon, don't string with arg. if you want to go in that direction use a set of DAdarrio 11's with the wound G. That would get you close to the string feel but the scale is still 1 1/4 inch shorter on the Epi so it won't feel the same until you raise the action a lot, you can get more tension going that way but then its limited for your rock gigs.
I'm primarily a solo jazz guitarist, and my main instrument is an Eastman 7 string. Howard Alden and Bucky Pizzarelli were the main reasons I wanted to play the kind of guitar I currently do, and the addition of that low A really is fantastic. I would suggest you buy Masters of th Plectrum Guitar and th Bucky Pizzarelli solo seven string guitar book to get started. They are both fun supplements to my weekly lessons.
I think so. There are some tunes where you must have that low A, but many others where you can use your standard A string instead, the chords or melody may not have the same fullness in sound. I'm currently working on getting Cry me a River up to speed, and that entire tune can be done without the low A.
