My band has bass, drums (snare and cymbals), and violin. The drum helps and fiddler chops when I solo. It can be thinner when you're accustomed to listening to music with rhythm guitar, but it works. Everyone else needs to be solid and straightforward when you solo.
A few months a go, I discovered Tim Kliphuis's lessons on the DC music school. I was quite pleased with it because I've always been looking for something similar: basically leading the violin player to play rhythm in a fashion that makes sense for the violin. One of the violinist I currently play with, does something along those lines: http://www.dc-musicschool.com/catalogue/video-lessons/jazz-violin-harmony-accompaniment-vol-2/3380749846/
