I got some D'Addario EJ21 (XL nickel wound) 12-52's. Local store only has 10-46 and 12-52 with the wound third.

Those old Kluson DeLuxe tuners are a lot of work to crank so after changing the strings I only played it about 5 minutes. Up close I like it better than the compound wounds I had, but the 3rd still sounds a lot different to me. I see on the package it has substantially higher tension than the 2nd and 4th strings, and that may be true for most wound 3rds and why it has always sounded odd to me with slightly heavier strings. They'll do for now.

I put 11 GJ strings on my Alvarez acoustic, had to make some adjustments tross rod etc... but it sounds good and it's really easy to play. .

OK. I'm curious if you note anything you can describe about the sound.

I assume the bulk of the character of a Selmac style guitar is the construction, and the strings a lesser effect. Kind of like the body provides the language, the strings the accent.
