I was listening to this version of Coquette. Sounds like the "le" upstroke is a little more distinct from beat 1 than in the playing of most modern GJ artists. Also it sounds like there's a "le" before "3" as well.

I'm just curious to see what some of you much more experienced GJ guys have to say.

I know every player has a different preference on the upstroke - Joscho for example it is more pronounced - still pretty easy going dynamically, but rhythmically he likes it definitely to be there. Of course Gonzalo is very different.

sounds more like a swung upstroke. There are some sections where it's done on every beat.

django doesn't play much rhythm in this recording, more like shots/fills/ornamented rhythm playing.. The two rhythm players are English guitarists

That is such great playing - sometimes I forget how wonderful his music is.

Django did not have a standard way of playing rhythm. It varied from session to session and track to track depending on the type of tune being played and the musicians involved. It also changed significantly over time.

"Coquette" is atypical in that the rhythm guitarists are English and had never played with Django before. Here they are again and I think they really swing:-

For me the 1946 english rhythm section is excellent certainly one of the most light and swinging Django and Stéphane ever had
