A strat can sound good in a jazz setting too. Be mindful of what pickups you use and the tone controls
Yeah I guess ultimately it's in the hands of the player and this Strat has a variety of sounds (it has humbuckers neck/bridge and a middle single coil) but it doesn't have that attack that you hear from archtops and for some reason unknown to me Tele's also have. I don't know what is it in the construction of the Telecaster that makes a difference, maybe it's the chambered ones but I think I heard that sound from the solid body ones too.

Hehe, thanks @rgrice no space left in the closet.

  • I hear you @Buco! Agree with attack and sound of Tele. This one has humbucker in neck but I don't even like the way it sounds! Iwhen I use it, it's bridge pickup only. The humbucker defeats the purpose of a Tele!

A strat with Humbuckers??? I am not an electric axe guy but is that normal. I don't recall any Strats back in my electric guitar days having buckers but hey, at my age memory is a wee bit fallible.

I have heard some great jazz played on Les Paul's Lovely sound to my ears. Micky Baker etc.

Do you play with a pick or fingers.

Mine is the aftermarket job although Fender had some configured as HSS from the factory.
I picked up mine at the store as the consignment so I never found out anything about it's history but it's done very professionally. Killed the vintage value but sounds sweet.

Well after everyone's amazing comments, and lovely tangents into electric guitars that of course had to happen, I have sold off my Telecaster and hopefully my amp will be gone this week. I picked up a really nice antique styled D hole guitar that compliments my ERG petite bouche wonderfully, and I am really happy and focused. Despite great advice, my finance couldn't stretch in both ways, and for the next many years I know where I am truly motivated and happy. Sometimes, you just have to be honest to yourself and let something go, despite sentimental value. There is so much in GJazz for me to learn that I am struggling just with the basics and getting a repertoire together. Goodbye electrics...thankyou for your years of fun and enjoyment (and money wasting....).

Thanks kindly, and not discounting the great advice I have received. Also I am coming to the end of my first year in my PhD studies, and mentally just being bombarded and just don't have as much spare time or mental energy to stretch too far! However if I had plenty of money though....sigh!

That's a badass strat @Buco. Do you know what hums are in it? I have a strat with a hum in the bridge slanted like that. I figure what's good for Ed is good for me.

Thanks @alton :) This is my most cherished instrument. I almost feel like higher power put me in front of it.
It's been awhile since I peeked in but I believe they are DiMarzio.

@fourowls now you're a 100% vested in. You better post a video of you kicking ass in 6 months, you have no excuse now!

haha! Well now that's a challenge isn't it! I did try to stay with a foot in electric camp, but then this really nice D hole that I had been drooling over came up cheaper than I thought, and it tipped me over the edge! As mentioned I am finding that GJ is just taking a lot of focus, even in the collection of trust worthy materials to study, how to learn the art, arpeggios as opposed to rocking on the pentatonic scale! Anyway onwards and upwards!
