Opus, that 'slap' rhythm has nothing to do with la pompe and it's more of a latin thing. I think G used that on some of his recordings.

I think Gonzalo, Joscho, Stochelo, etc. etc. would not really even bother to have these kinds of discussions??? They'd probably just play the way they like the sound of it and not always the same one song to the next.

Here is what counts, different approaches, no one caring about anything but making music, no right no wrong just NICE. Everyone listening respectfully and adding when they can. Tcha happy with what he HEARS Dave play , and if it's good enough for him.....no one trying to be merely right or merely authentic.

    No windbags,harping on.

And Moses is On fire in this set, seems to read Tcha's mind he is so intent in his listening , no two bars the same no one coasting.

Well I thought this debate had just about run it's course so thanks Dave for some inspirational Tcha. Forget any argument about the correct 'pompe'; Dave Kelbie goes his own way and is all the better for it. I had not heard of that recording before so I went straight over to the lejazzetal website and ordered the download.

Beautiful rendition. Not seeing any amplification for the rhythm guitarist. Was he just allowing his guitar to be picked up by the other mics?

I am also a fan of the classic pomp sound (added up stroke), however find it to be much more difficult to properly execute. In particular, when participating in jams with less experienced players, the lack of uniform execution of a proper pomp can cause the rhythm to fall apart and become chaotic. IMO, it is much easier to get all rhythm players in a jam session to play together with just down strokes in faster swing tunes. (Bossa, Bolero, slow stuff calls for a different approach.)

I'm always interested in jamming with experienced jazz and gypsy jazz players in the San Francisco - San Jose area. Drop me a line. Bass players welcome!
