Hodson guitars?

mcgroup53mcgroup53 Bloomington, IN USA✭✭✭✭ 1951 Ep Broadway
What's the consensus on David Hodson's guitars? Anhyone play one much or own one? I know Robin Nolan and other biggies have played them at one time or another. Just wondered how they compare to the Mateos/Gallato 452s, DA's and other small-shop guitars.

I have not played a Hudson but I do know that the Mateos is great. I play a Dupont most of the time and the Mateos is right up there with any top guitar. It plays very nice and has a great tone.

I've heard a lot of great things but have never played one. I understand they're very lightly built. Fapy apparently loves his Hodson, as does John Jorgenson.

There've been three at gypsyguitars.com for a while that look very nice, and David sent me a very nice note about them. I just wondered why no one has gotten one yet.

My understanding is that David doesn't usually sell through dealers but he traded these to Jacques for something. Jacques had 4, sold one, but the other 3 have been available for some time. Jacques doesn't seem to be pushing them -- could be a couple explanations as to why, but I have no idea.

I think part of it may be just that Hodson is in the UK and many of the people on this forum are in the US, so haven't had as much exposure to his instruments; as noted above he doesn't generally go through dealers, and the dollar isn't terribly strong nowadays either...

Yes, David told me he traded Jacques for an original Eddie Freeman to save it from the near-inevitable conversion (perversion?) to a six string neck.

Well, if anyone is interested, Jacques still has three of these guitars.

I would like to check them out, but I've heard that Jacques doesn't appreciate "window shoppers" which I can understand. One reason why he might still have 3 of them is that he's charging a bit more than what they would cost direct from David, including shipping. The benefit of buying from Jacques would be that (assuming you're somewhat local) you could play them first and have 3 to choose from.

I have a Hodson EFS and a Djangolin and enjoy both very much.. But both are probably too mando-centric for this thread (though I'm still wondering if Ted's found his EFS/Djazz primer.. Ted?)

Beautiful instruments. The EFS is quite loud, the Djangolin less so (though it has a sweet, bright, flattop sound that I like for choro). Both came equipped with Newtone strings, though the Djangolin's been shod with Thomastiks lately. Both are fun to play and always conversation starters! David's great to work with, but US Customs fees and International money transfer hassles kinda suck.

One of the reasons I went to David was at the time there was no one else - well, Dupont and Aylward were making Selmer-style mandos but I'd seen pics of JJ's Hodson and decided I wanted one like his; no one was building EFS. Now there are a lot more choices, but I don't regret my decision.
