How much do these run, do you recall? David's price includes UK VAT which is pretty hefty -- is it possible for US residents to get these refunded? Anyone know?
IIRC I ended up paying a couple hundred bucks Customs (for two instruments, bought about a year and a half apart).
The real killer was paying the fees for the bank transfers. I used an international moneychanger because my credit union couldn't figure out how to wire pounds directly to David's bank; needless to say I can understand why Jesus was so pissed!
I don't think the price I was quoted by David included VAT, but it was awhile ago - did you see that on his website? Actually the prices on his site now are quite out of date anyway. Best to contact him personally to work out S&H.
I have to say in all honesty, at the risk of insulting any number of Hodson-loving individuals, I played a couple of Hodsons at Jacques' pad in Delaware and they were completely underwhelming. Picked them up played a few bars ---- picked a few notes and put them down. No life at all. If I had bought either of these guitars sight unseen I would have been very unhappy.
Sockeye, what were you referring to when you mentioned that Jacque doesn't like "window shoppers"?
I ask b/c when I first went to buy a Sel/Mac, in '98, I was interested in an Aylward he was selling, and, having never played one before, inquired about an "approval period", like I've received every time I've purchased an instrument though the mail (TOO many times!).
I don't know if it was his policy to not give an approval period (which would seem unusual), or if there was simply a lack of effective communication, but he wouldn't allow me one. Needless to say, I didn't purchase one, and ordered a Park instead.
You were the previous owner of the D2HG? Great to run into you again.
I unfortunately parted with that guitar, and have had sellers' remorse ever since. I thought it might be overly bright, but should have just experimented with alternate strings; instead I sold it, and ended up with a standard D2H. I got over my flattop GAS, but have subsequently fallen into Sel/Mac GAS, hence my guitar for sale in the classifieds. I need to part with one more yet....
Thanks for the Window shopping clarification. It sounds like Jacque is offering an approval period now, anyway....
Charlie, no I wasn't the previous owner, but I think I was also considering buying the one you bought -- don't remember where it was for sale. (Elderly?) I had played a D2HG before that I really liked: warmer and richer than most Collings I had played. We had exchanged some emails at the time. I know your name from my days on flatpick-L I think.

Hey Charlie,
Our paths cross again -- you still have that Collings D2HG?
For the record, I have had no interactions w/ Jacques other than buying a Dupont bridge and that transaction couldn't have been smoother.

Now that I see your last name, it all comes back to me. Yes, indeed, I bought the D2HG from Elderly. What are you playing these days?
