Hey Everyone!
I’m starting to experiment with GJ pick making. I wanted to get your input on your favorite shapes and shapes you wish existed so that I can experiment with them. For thicknesses I’m using 3.18mm and 4.78mm.
Any other preferences would be great as well! For example, would you prefer picks with 3 identical tips like #1 and #6 or multiple different tips like #2 and #4? Any advice is welcome!
My current goal is to use the #1 shape, only thicker and with a bevel similar to #3 (more like a wegen) since I’ve always wished BlueChip would make thicker GJ picks.

I wish 2mm #5 existed in tortoise style like #7
That would be super cool, and exactly the type of input I’m looking for.

Yes! I found that the #1 pick above has 3 sides identical to the shoulder of the #4 shape. I am also going to add a bevel to it similar to #3 and #8.
I look at that black Dunlop pick and at first glance, I would have said it was a Wegen. I don't recall ever seeing anyone else use those grip lines before Wegen. Not sure if he didn't patent it or what, but especially made from that black material, I would have thought it was Wegen. Probably a case of the big guy picking on the little guy, and then undercutting on price. Similar to how #2 looks like a Blue Chip in shape and near color. Then again, there are only so many shapes for a pick.
Yeah, they are definitely shameless copies, however they use different, more affordable materials. The wegen-copy is polycarbonate and the BC-copy is Ultex. Both great materials though, especially ultex!
It would be hard not to undercut the price on a wegen or a blue chip 😄
More picks choices is always a good thing, especially when in the general neighborhood for me. Look at Jokko's model though (manouchepicks.com). He offers several materials, shapes, tips from round to pointy and everything in between and thicknesses vary from 2-6mm. When you order you just specify which material, shape and thickness you want and he'll make it.
I've always preferred picks on the extra thick side. At this point, I simply cannot use anything less than 3mm & have therefore settled on the #3 shape in large part because its ergonomic indent makes using a thick pick much easier for me. I also like its semi-rounded beveled tip. I'm not crazy about the Dunlop version given its string roll-off so I asked Jokko to do a custom order of his... Eliza? (can't remember) model & haven't looked back since.
Let me add one more thing. 🙂
The size of plectrums are obviously important but unfortunately that's not often listed by makers and sellers. For me, another 2 mm going whichever way on a pick can make a huge difference. More punch perhaps but is it holdable? #3, I believe, is 30mm X 27mm.
