Pat came through the area recently, I regret not going. I'll be following for the next time. As much as I say I never got into his band stuff (which is changing with some of the recommendations here), his duo record with Charlie Haden; Beyond the Missouri Sky, is one of the favorite records of my whole life.

That was my first Metheny album Buco, and I love it too. I remember buying it many years ago and being very excited hearing it for the first time. I was in a classical guitar group at the time and we'd been discussing Electric Counterpoint by Steve Reich and Pat Metheny.
This thread has got me listening to some of my collection again.
Electric Counterpoint by Steve Reich and Pat Metheny
Wow!!! Ngl I'm not a huge Metheny fan but I love Reich and had no clue this existed! Awesome listen for Reich fans, Kronos Quartet on the recording too and Metheny's playing in a minimalist context is absolutely fantastic as expected - thx for posting about this @Jangle_Jamie!
Sorry if I missed them but 2 must add tracks to the Playlist are:
Lonely Woman, from the Rejoicing album, a classic with Pat showcasing his gorgeous unique sound of his Linda Manzer acoustic guitar!
Dancing, from Jack DeJohnette's album Parallel Realities, which I happened to stumble upon on Spotify. This track IMHO, showcases Pat at his finest letting loose on electric.
@Phil I did listen to and saved Rejoice album. I like it. Thanks! Some of his exploratory-improvisational-20 minutes long songs- kind of stuff, well I don't have time and patience any longer. 30 years ago when I could get high and lay on the floor for hours while playing it on my headphones, then yes, different times.

Oh, I thought about another two things from Pat that I love - love his playing on . . .
Here with Joshua Redman (leader) Billy Higgins and Charlie Haden - Turnaround by Ornette . . https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3udTpP9NsaA - Pats playing is great, the whole record is pretty great really. "Wish" is the name of the album. (there are a bunch of live videos of this out there too)
And here with Abby Lincoln from the album "A Turtles Dream" - the tune is Throw it Away: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HjOZgYiYimk - just a fantastic solo. (again - the record is pretty great . . .)
There was a thread here a while back about "legends." I think eventually Pat will be considered one, because he has carved out a different (and authentic) voice in jazz guitar.

Aside from the brilliant "Beyond Missouri Skies" duet with Charlie Haden, I always enjoy Metheny's trio albums:
"Rejoicing" with Charlie Haden and Billy Higgins
"Question and Answer" with Dave Holland and Roy Haynes
Here's the playlist so far, thanks for all the suggestions. There's indeed beautiful stuff, I never came across these songs on my own.

I think he already is. With 20 Grammys to his name how could he not be?
