I think my top choices in life are Paris, Montreal and Quebec City by QC might be the prettiest of all (although the immediate outskirts are pretty blah). But Canada doesn't want me because I'm too old (45 is like their limit).
I'm leaning heavily towards Rochester, probably Dec 1 this year. I could still change my mind but I've thought a lot about it in the meantime.
If I don't like it, I'll blame you ;)
I will definitely visit in the meantime, I'll look you up. Any GJ events?
Not any GJ specific events, but my band Victrola Voila will start playing regularly at a few places over the next few months. I have a heavy work travel schedule coming up unfortunately, so nothing until January 21st. Connect with me via DM here (or I believe we're also connected on Facebook at IG) and I would be glad to chat more directly. You would probably benefit greatly from meeting my band leader as well, as she recently was going through the same thing and ended up in Rochester from Montana. Not sure how much of my goading made her pick Rochester, but she seems really happy here!
Saw this article this morning regarding Buffalo. Looks like there are a lot of new jobs expected there meaning a large influx of new workers meeting a small supply of housing. It seems I've seen this situation across America lately. It even talks about some places such as LA and TX where housing prices are cheaper and in abundant supply, yet recent weather events have made homeowner's insurance skyrocket. Bottom line: these are the nuts and bolts things that aren't sexy to think about when moving to your own dream town, but should be at least considered.
Since you like cold climates, and being in the U.S. is an advantage, you might consider Greenland (after xxxxx seizes it from Denmark and makes it part of the U.S.). I'll bet houses aren't very expensive there. (But I don't know about the GJ scene.)
Yeah, only thing around the National Capitol Region you'll get for under $200k are apartments or possibly condos. Probably not going to let you put up a tiny house in Kennebunkport! ha ha

Well, as a data point, two pictures. Houses under $200k listed in the last 7 days Rochester vs Portland Maine.
Now you're giving me ideas, Paul.
This is non sensical:

Nice. Finished basement, finished attic. Plenty of shop space.

I want a garage and maybe a yard to grow food when the big one comes.
I would be in Canada right now if they didn't discriminate against middle aged people.
Real estate in New England is bizarre. It's so expensive but in many ways it's not like super special to live here. I don't get it.
