I have been messing around with the IR thing for a while with some frustration at getting something that worked with minimum feedback and weird extraneous noises. I feel like today I'm pretty close to what I was hoping it would be.

Of note this video sounds very boomy on speakers in my kitchen (where it was recorded) but I think that's because the room seems to stack up the bass pretty badly. I don't really hear it on earbuds and live in the room it doesn't seem noticeable.

I haven't really been happy with the NVTone mics I have been trying. They seem to feedback at minimal volumes. They do seem to add some nice body to the sound but haven't been worth it so far.

So this is just the K&K clone piezo inside the guitar going to the Sonicake Smartbox running the custom IR, I have an EQ in the pedal rolling off all of 125k and most of 400k and some reverb.

The real secret though is the Alto TX410 powered PA speaker. I've been trying it with the ZT Lunchbox and just don't get nearly as nice results. The PA speaker seems resistant to feedback and really sounds great.

Perhaps not perfect but I think this is very useable.

I am somewhat confident that I can vibecode an IR loader that can run full length acoustic IRs onto a pedal, but the ultimate goal is that it's onboard the guitar.

It sounds good. Nice playing too. I really think to get the best out of IR, you need something with a full range speaker. When it comes to the eq I definitely kill all the low end stuff but I'd think around 400hz is a useful range to keep, no? I'll try to see if I can measure but I wonder if that's where that amazing rumble sits that these kind of guitars do so well. I think any microphone will need feedback control features, notch filter etc, it's unavoidable.

I didn't really get that last paragraph?

Solid and helpful Buco. I'll get back to you.

Last sentence basically there's a audio specific microcontroller called a Daisy seed. I think it will be superior for playing IRs to what's currently available. I would have to use Claude to code it but I have been doing a lot of semi insane stuff with coding and I think it's pretty doable.

You got me thinking about how to make a better IR.

Without the low cut the guitar feeds back at a much lower volume and it take a lot of this thumpy body noise out but I agree it's not ideal.

First real gig of my life is tonight but I'm going to try to make a better IR in the meantime.

That's what this app captured: strumming C9 then D9 then E9 (all with the 5th in the bass). There was quite a bit activity actually in 125 hz range as well.

By the way if you open the video file link in a new tab, it will stream the video without having to download the file.

Hey bro, not to imply you need any well wishes but hope the gig goes great!

Gig went well! Thanks. I'm very glad it's over. I didn't do anything but practice for this for the last couple months. No shop etc. We played Place De Broukere and no train wrecks.

Definitely learned all the things I need to work on but it was overall really good.

Buco that all makes sense. I note that it sounds pretty darn good with that stuff rolled off but I get what you're saying.

I'm suspicious that the IR I made with my ribbon mic is actually taking in a really boomy effed up room sound (my kitchen) and that blocked up bass is coming through the IR. I am working on a Windows app for making IRs and I'm going to use a calibrated microphone that I have for doing acoustic testing as well as the ribbon. It looks like I might be able to blend them or ideally take parts from one or the other to make the IR.

That could actually be the issue I've had with the IRs so far, they can be overly bassy and boomy. In a way I wonder if the IR with the ribbon mic is in some ways less accurate than the Piezo because it's picking up so much room sound sh1t. Anyway now I have time to work on it.

    Your thoughts were helpful, thanks.

Awesome man, knew it would and so glad to hear!

Oh yeah, heard...reminds me of that old, somewhat sage music quip which goes something like "you go into the studio to learn your songs"

I would love if performing and practicing felt closer to each other but when I play live it feels like I'm deaf and my fingers are made of jelly or something. Everything feels weird. It's super annoying. It would be better if I played live more often.

Setting the sound up for performing, probably best to dial in whatever E.Q. etc. and mix allows you to play your best -- hearing yourself, notes don't sound too thin, playing one note sounds good, you don't need to bang away hard, etc. Most people don't realize they're playing too hard live.

Yeah I don't know that it's really about the actual sound and more just in my mental headspace where my perception changes. It's like I can hear myself but it doesn't connect mentally with how it feels to practice.
