Thanks for the, albeit anecdotal, info re: modern Argies. After reading my own post, I thought, “this doesn’t make sense”…. I’m choosing strings that I admit don’t sound the best because of non-sound related characteristics. I should be using the best sounding strings and adapting to whatever non-sound related shortcomings they have. Anyway, when changing strings last night I threw on an old set of argies I had (the older plastic style packaging not the newer cardboard). It’s been a while, I’m gonna give them another try.
I tried to post up as “the guy who really likes D’addario GJ strings”, but I may have ended up convincing myself to go back to Savarez.
@Arcticguitar no, you were spot-on about QC being an issue with Argies tho, at least the older, pre-cardboard packaging ones (I used to get a bunch of bad/dud Bs and high Es along with the occasional A or low E that would unwind after barely playing on them) - I just wanted to mention that for whatever reason, they really do seem to have improved their manufacturing process and I've a had a couple friends notice the same thing, @JSanta as well now too :)

I'm all about the Argies. I tried the D'Addarios several years ago because my local guitar store carried them & I was curious. But they weren't quite as good as the Argies in sound & feel to me. Not bad at all, just not what I'm used to. As to the quality control, I go through around 24 sets a year (the 11's, loop end from Michael) and in the last 5 years or so, I've only had one bad string. Not bad!
