Keep downstrokes on the beat?

From what you all are saying, it seems like there isn’t one particular method. And I guess it will also inevitably depend on context. But having noodled around these last few days, it seems like the guideline of playing down on the downbeat stands. When trying to skip it, it often runs into other picking problems.

As far as the double tap goes, it’s early days, but Denis Chang’s advice on flicking really seems to be a breakthrough. It also makes sense rather than driving two full arm rest strokes in a row.

There is also the technique of the bouncing rest stroke which I’m hopeful will help cross stringing onto the lower strings.

You're right @wim with the picking and the timing. But this feels/looks to me like he's doing the triplet picking. DUD DUD. Otherwise he might have put a down on beat two and then alternate.

IMO as a general rule there is nothing wrong with downstrokes on upbeats as it can even swing harder.

I agree. If the 1/8 notes are not too fast this is my prefer way, but if it’s so fast that I have to use alternate picking, then I prefer down strokes on the beat.
