Swingin the classics

Jazz flautist Hubert Laws has played Bach, Stravinsky, Satie and others on various recordings, none of which I've heard. "The Best of" & "Afro-Classic" & "The Rite of Spring" all look like cool recordings. Anyone heard any of them?

Guitarist Jim Hall does his take on the Concierto de Aranjuez on a recording appropriately entitled, "Concierto." I've heard this one, and it's great.

That's actually a relatively popular piece among gypsy jazz players as well...the Rosenberg Trio do a version worth checking out as an intro to 'Spain'...

    best,
    Jack.

The Saga Jazz label has a two volume series called "Jazzin' the Classics" that compiles swing and bop-era interpretations of classical pieces.

I haven't heard it. Their "Jazz a la Gitane" series is really good (lots of somewhat obscure European small-band swing) and pretty cheap, so "Jazzin' the Classics" is probably a pretty safe bet.

Has anyone ever heard similarity between the opening phrase of "Them There Eyes" and Grieg's "Morning Mood" from the Peer Gynt Suite?

It sure sounds like it's the same motive...
