I just got my Gypsy Picking book and began reading it today (I love the history thus far!)
I have the same question (which wasn't explicitly answered earlier). Rather than asking it, I've drawn a quick image in photoshop - does 45º mean the first, second, or both? (The E denotes low E).
Curious about the answer.

I don't know whether I'll ever be an excellent player if I keep practicing, but I'm absolutely sure I won't be if I stop.

The second.....
The second for tremolo, or for general rest-stroke picking? The Serendipity site shows a photo like the first image. Sorry to keep asking, I just want to be sure I don't dedicate hours of practice to the wrong technique.
Again, excellent book, it's far more exciting to read it than work on my mathematical statistics homework!

Just for lead lines....for tremolo you need to get a 90 degree angle.
